Mercury News, Team San Jose and the Pink Poodle

Category : Content Producer, Off The Cuff, TSJ Articles

The following is in regards to my posting on the Things to do page on SanJose.org here

Team San Jose supports Pink Poodle “… sort of

“Have you ever been to a strip club that let you hose down a fully nude nubile in a shower tub only inches in front of you?”

Nope? Neither has IA, but that didn’t stop the folks at Team San Jose, the beleaguered nonprofit that runs the city’s convention center and several downtown theaters, from listing a visit to “the lovely ladies of the Pink Poodle gentleman’s club” as a top recommendation on the group’s website, www.sanjose.org.

IA found a disclaimer on the site: “These pages do not in any way constitute official Team San Jose content. The views and opinions expressed in the pages are strictly those of the page authors.”

But we’d bet most casual readers might not realize that.

Also, IA has to note: even though a jaunt to the Pink Poodle and other “adult’s play” activities are listed on the website under the category, “Things to do in San Jose,” the infamous strip joint actually sits in an unincorporated pocket of Santa Clara County. We’re just sayin’.

I had to laugh at the Mercury News’ Internal Affairs section mentioning this. They seem to forget that SanJose.org, and Team San Jose, exists to promote all of San Jose’s, and to an extent much of the Bay Area’s, activities, nightlife, culture, etc. and this includes the Pink Poodle. While TSJ has always been a little more conservative than sites such as SanJose.com which features the club with photos of the dancers and has a directory of adult places, it doesn’t make sense to try and ignore these legitimate businesses that many visitors and locals enjoy going to.

And as far as the Pink Poodle being in an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County…really? The intersection of Bascom Avenue and San Carlos is smack in the middle of San Jose, so I really don’t see how anyone would dissociate that corner from San Jose at all, regardless of this small block’s zoning.

Maybe the writers of IA should try visiting this venue more often, my wife and I would be more than happy to pay for your first semi-private dance.

Movies, art, birthdays, wine tasting and HempCon

Category : Adventures, Off The Cuff

I had hoped to have more energy and enthusiasm in this, but I’m very tired, but I felt I needed to make a post…

Friday began with the wife and I grabbing a couple drinks on the CA Theatre Patio, before hitting Motif and then back to the CA Theatre for the last of the summer movies Cabaret, which was enjoyable, though arguably not one of the best movies ever made from a stage production.

The evening continued for us as we witnessed Rykarda Parasol playing on stage and stepped into Anno Domini’s gallery showing Fernando Chamarelli _ Pangea_ A very enjoyable evening, although cut short by the wife almost falling asleep standing up.

This past Saturday was one of my cousin’s birthdays which was fun as we hung out in Butcher Park for some time. This was followed by a trip up to the lovely Savannah-Chanelle winery where we celebrated a friend’s birthday and participated in a wine tour, followed by some bocce ball.

Which led to Sunday where I visited the HempCon exhibit happening in Team San Jose’s South Hall big blue tent, which wasn’t nearly as interesting as I anticipated it to be, but I had an enjoyable time and took some photos.

Updates on Me

Category : Adventures, Off The Cuff

Recently my work load has been increasing exponentially, as some may have noticed from a /. Submission last month, and one would think that with the recent launch of the new SanJose.org site I’d have my focus back out among the crowds in our fair city pimping all things San Jose. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been much of a viable option yet.

One of our hosting providers went down for a day with no notification or follow up with us and needless to say I am now in charge of migrating the affected sites away from this cluster fuck of a company and to a new provider.

But even this must be put on hold as all next week I’ll be attending the DMAI conference in Florida.

Of course on the tech side of things I’ve been trying to keep abreast of recent developments like the latest Google and Blackberry apps and Apple’s  new iPhone slogan of “there’s a case for that”, though I hope to have more insight that I can comment on soon.

Knee-jerk reaction to SV Moms Group closing down

Category : Off The Cuff

So if you haven’t seen the press release or read a blog post about it, SV Moms Blog is shutting down their site and their 12 other regional sites. The reason, it’s not a sustainable business model. Translation, they aren’t making money. This reason baffles me.

Knowing nothing of their business practices I can’t help but wonder how a 13 website company with 400 bloggers consistently writing for this site with a traffic rank of around 140k and numerous ad spots sold on the site and incorporated throughout isn’t making money. My guess is that they either are paying their bloggers, management team or both too much money.

I know it’s not their hosting or platform as they use a custom typepad site and since they have said they’ll leave the blog online after they have shut down the services, I’m feeling my previous comment is more on the money, or lack of.

So what does it take to run a blog and make money? I guess it depends. For me I don’t make money on this blogging thing, I mean technically I do, but I have a full-time job and a few part-time jobs as well. Money from this blog is just nickels and dimes that combined with my other nickels and dimes from my PDF publishing company add up to a decent alcoholic outing once a month.

Sure many bloggers who can get the following and traffic volume of people like Daren Rowse make money, and while he has a few people working with him, he’s not paying 400 people to write for him or paying his management team exorbitant amounts of money.

In the end, I would love to take over facilitation of their site, not pay anyone to write for it, cut down the management team significantly and evaluate their salaries and keep what I view as a successful blogging community going strong.

It’s “Website” NOT “Web Site”

Category : Off The Cuff

Based on conversations I had today.

From the AP STYLE http://www.apstylebook.com/?do=view_recent_ask

Q. What’s the reasoning behind changing your long-held position from Web site to website, but keeping Web page and Web feed as two words? – from Chicago, IL on Fri, Jun 04, 2010

A. rpting response from May 27: the Web, shortened proper name for the World Wide Web, as in Webster’s. The dictionary also has separate listings for Web page (two words), and website (one word).

Monopoly in the Park Saga III

Category : Off The Cuff

After a series of events it’s come down to this.

I had a chance to speak with Jill and Jose, and fortunately they may be able to continue to operate the facility on a volunteer basis so that the project doesn’t die, however, there just isn’t any resources from our organization right now to allow us to take on this project with the current city’s request that 100% of the revenue be turned over to the city. The city’s last addendum to the original proposal would not even allow for excess funds to go into marketing the facility or for a revenue share model to cover the costs of managing, operating and growing the venue.

I’ve updated the website with some of the latest images as well as some video, and I’ll be able to continue to make sure the site is running, just as Jose and Jill will try to facilitate the venue when there is interest, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like this venue will be rekindled anytime soon.

On the upside, I sat down with my CEO today and as soon as things pick up we’ll be able to revisit this project, as well as we were able to identify the three key roles we’d need to properly manage the facility. So at least we have an outline of what needs to happen to take this on and make it a success.

Monopoly in the Park Saga II

Category : Off The Cuff

May 24th – I received an email back from Devony Taylor at the City Manager’s office about my inquiry and she referred me to Ernest Guzman. I tell her of the situation and link her to my blog post.

May 25th – Ernest calls me after having read my blog post. He told me that Team San Jose had put in a proposal for the management of the facility a few years back, but their proposal had been denied. I wasn’t given specific reasons to this, though the person from our end who had been involved in this process isn’t someone who is involved anymore now. He also mentions that Jose Posadas is a volunteer running the facility now, but that he doesn’t have a phone number for him. He forwards me an email with Jose’s Earthlink address.

I ask him about TSJ possibly taking over management of the facility and what the process would be and I’m informed that I would need to wait until after the 22nd of June (City Budget Approval) and check in with him to see if the city wants to send out RFP’s (Request for Proposals) and then TSJ would need to submit a new proposal. I mark my calendar.

May 26-27th – I email Jose, as well as find him on LinkedIn (figured I had good luck with finding Jill Cody, so this would work) during this time Jill checks in on the status of things and I fill her in. She also emails Jose and gets him in touch with me. We decide to schedule a sit down and talk about the project and what we can do to champion this.

I’ll update again after our meeting.
